Privacy
Obscur exists to tell you what’s real. That principle applies to how we treat your data, too — so this policy is short, and it says exactly what happens.

- We analyze only the images or video frames you explicitly choose.
- Those images are analyzed and then discarded. We don’t store them, and we don’t train on them.
- No accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking.
- We never sell or share your data. There is nothing to sell.
- The browser extension doesn’t read the pages you visit or watch your browsing.
Who we are
Obscur is a product of Rao Studios, LLC. This policy covers the Obscur website at obscur.rao.nyc — including the /detect research preview — and the Obscur browser extension. We refer to both as “Obscur” below.
What we process
The only content Obscur handles is the image you deliberately hand it: a file you drop on the detect page, an image you right-click, or a video frame you tap to capture. That image is sent over an encrypted connection to our detection service, analyzed, and the verdict is returned to you.
When you analyze a video frame, the frame is captured in your own browser and only that single still is sent — never the video, never a recording.
Nothing else on the page is read, collected, or transmitted. Obscur acts only when you ask it to, on the one thing you pointed at.
What we don’t collect
We have no accounts and no logins, so we hold no name, email, or profile for you. We set no cookies and run no analytics, advertising, or fingerprinting of any kind. We do not track you across sites, and we do not build a profile of what you analyze.
How long we keep things
Images are processed in memory to produce a verdict and are discarded once that verdict is returned. We don’t retain them, archive them, or use them to train or improve our models.
Like any web service, our hosting provider and detection server keep short-lived operational logs — typically the time of a request, its size, and the originating IP address. These exist to keep the service running and secure, are not linked to any identity, and are not used to profile you.
Extension settings
The browser extension stores two preferences: whether the hover button appears on images, and the minimum image size at which it appears. These live in your browser’s own storage. If you have Chrome sync enabled, Chrome may sync them across your devices under your Google account — that’s between you and Chrome. Either way, those settings are never sent to us.
Extension permissions, in plain English
Installing the extension grants it nothing. Site access is optional and asked for separately, from a button in the extension’s own popup, and you can revoke it there at any time.
When you do grant it, the access covers all websites for one reason: you can right-click an image anywhere, and we can’t know in advance which sites those will be. It is used only when you invoke Obscur — to place the result panel on the page and to fetch the bytes of the image you chose, which often live on a different image server than the page itself.
One narrow exception: when a video’s frames can’t be read directly because of the site’s security rules, the extension takes a screenshot of the visible tab and immediately crops out the video’s rectangle, discarding the rest. This happens only on a tap you initiate, and only the cropped frame is analyzed.
Third parties
Our website and detection service are hosted on infrastructure operated by Vercel Inc. and by us; your request necessarily passes through that infrastructure to be answered.
The browser extension loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, which means that request reveals your IP address to Google, as any web font request would. It fetches nothing else from anyone.
We have no other third parties. No trackers, no data brokers, no ad networks.
Children
Obscur isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, or delete the personal data a company holds about you. In our case the honest answer is that we hold essentially none: no account, no stored images, no profile. We don’t sell or share personal information, and we never have. If you’d like to ask about any of this, write to us — we’ll answer plainly.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll revise the effective date above and post the updated version here. If a change ever materially affects how we handle your images, we’ll say so prominently rather than bury it.
